Rigging Classes

Local 597 offers rigging and signaling courses to our members.  Signal Person Safety Training is required by OSHA for an individual to direct a crane.  The UA certified rigger course will give the Journeyman a better understanding of the forces at work when a lift is being made.  The Signal Person Safety Training is included in the UA rigging class.  A member must re-certify every four years.  If you have questions regarding the rigging program at Local 597, please contact the training center.

UA Rigging Class

U.A. INDUSTRIAL RIGGING CERTIFICATION COURSE

Objective: This course will offer students an opportunity to gain a better working knowledge and understanding of Industrial Rigging. Students will learn the many aspects of Industrial Rigging including safety, sling angles, shackle requirements, crane dynamics, crane signals, calculating loads, coefficients of friction, tuggers, and other math formulas required to perform safe hoisting.

Requirements: Students registered for this class must bring a current Union Card, drivers license, calculator, notebook, highlighters, safety glasses, & work gloves. Standard work clothing is required.

Course Schedule: This five (5) week course will meet on Mondays & Wednesdays from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Students are required to attend all classes. The Signal Person Safety Training class will also be included with this course.

Certification: Students completing this course will receive the U.A./E.P.R.I. Industrial Rigging Certification. This certification is valid for 5 years.  Rigging skills are evaluated by means of a certification exam that consists of multiple choice questions. A score of 80% or above must be achieved on the written exam. A crane performance exam is also required. During the performance exam, individuals must plan and execute a critical lift utilizing a piping spool assembly, perform a load inversion, and transfer.

Signal Person Safety Training Class

Objective: This class will offer students an opportunity to gain a better knowledge and understanding of crane signals. Students will learn the proper signals, crane safety, crane dynamics, and review electrocution hazards while working with cranes. This class meets OSHA’s new 1926.1428 crane safety standard.

Class requirements: Students are required to attend this 3-hour class and pass a written and practical exam. Students will be issued a signal card upon completion.

  • Class enrollment is limited to 15 students
  • A picture I.D. & Current Union Card are required at sign in

Rigging Recertification

U.A. INDUSTRIAL RIGGING RECERTIFICATION

The U.A. Industrial Rigging Certification is valid for five (5) years.  The Training Center is offering a one (1) day review & one (1) day exam to recertify. The review class will be held on a Thursday evening 5pm -8 pm with the exam to follow Saturday 7am – 3:30pm.  Students are required to pass a 50 question exam. There will be no practical exam. Students must be registered two (2) weeks prior to the exam date. Students should bring a calculator and previous class material and their rigging binder to review class.

Note: Cell phone calculators are not permitted.
